Youth Mental Health | AI & Data Science | Social Work & the Law
My name is Daniel Gibbs, and I am an assistant professor at the University of Georgia School of Social Work. I conduct research on how human services systems can effectively serve youth with complex needs, with an emphasis on the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and the intersection of social work and the law.
As a former attorney and social worker practicing in the child welfare and child mental health systems, my research seeks to understand and improve professional decision-making within human services fields to promote positive outcomes for children, youth, and families. My current projects employ quantitative, mixed, and system dynamics methods to explore:
the integration of AI and other technologies in child- and family-serving systems;
the linkage of large administrative data sources to understand transition-age foster youth outcomes; and
the ways that communities can strengthen youth mental health crisis response systems.
I have chosen a career in social work research as I believe it allows me to use my analytical and collaborative skills to produce a positive impact in these critically important systems. Further, I believe that working in an academic context allows me to pursue a community-engaged research agenda that can equip practice communities to conduct high-quality, evidence-informed, and innovative work that helps children and families.
I have created this website to share my prior, current, and future work in these areas. Please take a look at sections highlighting my research, teaching, public speaking, and data science projects, and feel free to reach out to chat via my contact information below.

Being a researcher and teacher is a key part of who I am, but my life outside of academia is incredibly meaningful to me.
I am a proud husband to my wife Amanda and father to my daughter Evie. We love to spend our time camping, playing games, and walking with our dogs Kitt and Ella.
When I'm not working or spending time with them, I am normally reading fiction, hiking, or playing guitar, mandolin, and banjo. I am also an avid fan of Everton Football Club and the Atlanta Braves.
